The Unspillable

Best Hardware Hack (223 teams)

Bitcamp · 2026

A spoon that keeps its bowl perfectly level no matter how much your hand shakes, so people with tremors can eat without spilling. The real product costs over $300; this team built one in a weekend with a tiny computer chip and two small motors.

When researching solutions to Parkinson's and hand tremors, we realized that spoons with actual self-stabilizing technology were very expensive, often easily above $300. Thus, we decided to try to make one with easily accessible microcontrollers, motors and sensors to make an affordable version. The Unspillable is a smart spoon that uses a 2-axis sensor-motor system to counteract tremors and tilts in real time. The spoon bowl always remains perfectly level no matter the angle of the handle or hand. We wired together an Arduino Nano, a MPU6050 sensor, two servo motors, a button and a battery to be the core self-stabilizing system. Then we used CAD to create a case for it all and 3D printed it so we could use our system as the handle.
